Smart Branding Tips For Nonprofits

Branding is a crucial piece of the puzzle not just for for-profit businesses, but also nonprofit organizations. A brand will dictate what people think of the nonprofit and dictate its public persona, engagement, and fundraising success. Here are some tips to build a good nonprofit brand.

Have a differentiator: Foundations and individual contributors have plenty of choices in who to support. This is why a nonprofit should stand out by making it known where they work, their method of problem-solving that’s different from other organizations, and the goal they are pursuing.

Build a tagline and positioning statement: A tagline gives people a reason to get engaged with one, while a positioning statement shows one’s differentiator, and why people should support the initiative. These will form the value proposition and the results the audience can expect from the value being offered.

Be a thought leader: Let it be known that the nonprofit is innovative and forward-thinking by having thought leadership and savvy approaches to getting things done. Share knowledge and expert opinion on a given niche to help people better understand the cause.

Have a solid foundation and culture: Building a successful nonprofit brand starts at home, where the company culture will best shape it and define what it’s all about. Inconsistency will confuse the audience and make them wonder why the organization’s values aren’t matching up.
